Physical Education in Our Schools

By Kathy Crawford

Physical Education is a vital part of our public education system. It is a key to improving a child’s confidence, brainpower and long-term health. One of the major goals of physical education is to prepare students to be active and healthy for a lifetime. Physical education should be an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Recognizing the importance of physical education at a young age promotes healthy habits throughout life. As modern life becomes more sedentary and specialized, particularly for those who live in cities, the importance of physical education increases. It is important that children understand the importance of Physical Education and good health in their lifestyle. Schools should also recognize the importance of physical education.

One significant area of concern is the decrease in the physical activity of youth and of physical education in schools. The need for more physical education in schools is increasingly obvious to parents and healthcare professionals as well as professional educators. This is a great first step in elevating the role of physical education in schools.

Teaching physical education and play are as crucial to a child’s development as any academic endeavor. Teaching physical education majors study the effects of physical activity on the body and mind, especially in the development of young people.

Physical education is a supremely important component of a child’s development. Physical Education is an important aspect of a total education. Again one of the major goals of physical education is to prepare students to be active and healthy for a lifetime. Physical education is key to improving a child’s confidence, brainpower and long-term health. The aim of physical education is to establish a culture of health and fitness, which is for the benefit of society. Quality physical education should be provided to all students as an integral part of K-12 education.

Physical Fitness

By Jimmy Sturo

Physical fitness is a necessary requisite for leading a healthy and an active life. It not only improves the strength and endurance of the body but also the lifestyle of a person. Physical fitness is difficult to maintain, especially amid the stress and strain of contemporary lifestyles, with little scope for exercise and recreation.

The vital components of physical fitness are cardiovascular strength and endurance, respiratory efficiency, muscular strength and flexibility. In addition, a number of other factors such as environmental, chronological and physiological age and genetics influence physical fitness. The physical fitness methods adopted by one person should not be the same as for another, since the physique and health condition are usually not the same. Though physical activity or exercise acts as a catalyst to achieve physical fitness, a well-balanced diet also aids this process. A regular and systematic workout and a planned meal is a recommended way to maintain physical fitness. Small physical activities that suit an individual’s physical condition are more effective than heavy exercises.

Being physically fit will reduce various health-related problems such as obesity, hypertension and cardio-vascular problems. Apart from developing strong muscular mass, physical fitness induces wellness and emotional stability. In addition, a better performance of heart, lungs and other body organs is assured. Physical fitness can be achieved through yoga sessions, aerobic classes and muscular fitness exercises.

Physical Inactivity - A Major Risk Factor for Life Style Diseases

By Dharmagadda Sreedhar

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Physical Inactivity has been linked to cardiovascular mortality. It is also a major risk factor for other life style diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and the diseases associated with smoking, alcohol and drug abuse. Regular exercise or physical activity is significantly important for the health and well being of children, adults and old adults. Even among frail and very old adults, mobility and functioning can be improved through physical activity.

Regular exercises such as brisk walking, jogging, running, hiking, stair climbing, swimming, playing, bicycling and rowing improves endurance and ultimately account for the overall physical and mental fitness. Research has demonstrated that virtually all individuals can benefit from regular physical activity, whether they participate in vigorous exercise or some type of moderate health enhancing physical activity.

Many studies notify that physical activity of both, moderate and vigorous intensity has been associated with a range of beneficial health outcomes, which include reduced risk of dying prematurely from heart disease or stroke, developing some forms of cancers (colon, prostate, lung, breast and endometrial), developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Regular physical activity can help control blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes, obesity and it has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality from several chronic diseases.

There are even studies stating that physical exercise is not only beneficial for body but also the brain. Regular physical activity is also essential for maintaining muscle strength, joint structure, joint functioning, and bone strength. Medical Associations recommend physical activity at least for 30 minutes of moderate activity, five days per week, or 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three times per week. Programs designed by medical associations to improve physical fitness take into account frequency (how often), intensity (how hard), and time (how long) of the physical exercise.

Although there is awareness about the exercise, the frequency, intensity and duration of exercise is not well known. Whether vigorous exercise is harmful or not for an individual’s general health and wellbeing is a very contentious topic. There are scientists who strongly claim that the effects of physical activity can be beneficial for humans and, on the other hand, there are experts who firmly say that exaggerated levels of physical activity may lead to health disorders. However, people worldwide should not get a wrong message that vigorous exercise is harmful for the health. Physical activity within normal limits not only helps in prevention of the chronic ailments but also save overall health care costs.
